Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Isaiah Chapter 52”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Isaiah 52 is a vibrant “wake-up call” to the people of Israel, shifting from the lament of previous chapters to a message of imminent redemption. It calls for Jerusalem to shake off the dust of captivity and prepare for the return of the Divine presence of אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה – the LORD Elohim (God). The chapter builds toward a dramatic climax, introducing the “Servant” whose suffering and eventual exaltation will startle the world!

Let us now read Yeshayahu - Isaiah Chapter 52: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanakh).

1. “Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.

2. Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem; loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

3. For thus saith יְהוָה - the LORD: Ye were sold for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.

4. For thus saith אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim: My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

5. Now therefore, what do I here, saith יְהוָה - the LORD, seeing that My people is taken away for nought? They that rule over them do howl, saith יְהוָה - the LORD, and My Name continually all the day is blasphemed.

6. Therefore My people shall know My Name; therefore they shall know in that day that I, even He that spoke, behold, here I am.

7. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger of good tidings, that announceth peace, the harbinger of good tidings, that announceth salvation; that saith unto Zion: ‘Thy אֱלֹהִים - Elohim reigneth!

8. Hark, thy watchmen! they lift up the voice, together do they sing; for they shall see, eye to eye, יְהוָה - the LORD returning to Zion.

9. Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for יְהוָה - the LORD hath comforted His people, He hath redeemed Jerusalem.

10. יְהוָה - the LORD hath made bare His Holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our אֱלֹהִים.

11. Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, ye that bear the vessels of יְהוָה - the LORD.

12. For ye shall not go out in haste, neither shall ye go by flight; for יְהוָה - the LORD will go before you, and the אֱלֹהִים of Israel will be your rearward.

13. Behold, My servant shall prosper, he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high.

14. According as many were appalled at thee-so marred was his visage unlike that of a man, and his form unlike that of the sons of men.

15. So shall he startle many nations, kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which had not been told them shall they see, and that which they had not heard shall they perceive”.

What was this chapter really all about? Let us take a look at what it was really saying:

Isaiah Chapter 52 calls for Zion and Jerusalem to “awake, awake” and put on strength and beautiful garments, as the unclean will no longer enter. It urges Jerusalem to rise from the dust and loosen the bands of their necks.

אֱלֹהִים states that Israel was “sold for nought” and will be redeemed “without money”. He reminds them of past deliverances from Egypt and Assyria, who oppressed us without cause. However, אֱלֹהִים is motivated to act because the captors’ mockery is blasphemy against His blessed Name. Redemption will lead to a personal knowledge of  אֱלֹהִים- Elohim’s Name and presence.

The chapter highlights the beauty of the messenger bringing good tidings of peace, salvation, and that “Thy אֱלֹהִים reigneth”. The watchmen will see אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s return to Zion eye to eye and sing together. A call is made for the waste places of Jerusalem to sing and break forth into joy because אֱלֹהִים has comforted His people and redeemed Jerusalem.

אֱלֹהִים will make His Holy arm bare to all nations, so that the ends of the earth will see His salvation. Those leaving Babylon, especially those bearing the vessels of יְהוָה - the LORD, are commanded to depart, go out from thence, touch no unclean thing, and be clean. This departure will not be in haste or flight, as יְהוָה - the LORD will go before them and be their rearward.

The chapter introduces the Servant, who will prosper, be exalted, lifted up, and very high. This Servant was severely disfigured, appalling many, almost beyond human recognition. The Servant will startle many nations and kings, who will see and consider that which they had not been told or heard.

My Closing Message:

Isaiah 52 emphasizes the journey of deliverance from captivity to restoration. It assures that אֱלֹהִים is actively working, making His power visible to the world. The chapter introduces the suffering “Servant” who brings about universal salvation, a theme further explored in the next chapter.
