Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

Haggai Chapter 2

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:
Haggai Chapter 2 addresses a community grappling with “the day of small things”. Returning from the Babylonian exile, the people are disheartened by the modest scale of the Second Temple compared to the legendary grandeur of Solomon’s structure. This chapter serves as a Divine psychological intervention. It shifts the focus from the physical aesthetics of the building to the spiritual presence of the Almighty and the impending movement of history. Haggai’s message is one of encouragement, ritual purity, and the promise of a future where the internal devotion of a people outweighs the external splendour of stone and gold.

Let us commence and read Haggai Chapter 2, verses 1-23: (JPS-1917 version of the Torah). Below the chapter I will provide a commentary of what you will have read in this chapter.

1. “In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of יְהוָה - the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying: 2. ‘Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying: 3. Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? is not such a one as nothing in your eyes? 4. Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith יְהוָה - the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith יְהוָה - the LORD, and work; for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts. 5. The word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt have I established, and My spirit abideth among you; fear ye not. 6. For thus saith צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot (of Hosts): Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; 7. and I will shake all nations, and the choicest things of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with glory, saith צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot8. Mine is the silver, and Mine the gold, saith צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot9. The glory of this latter house shall be greater than that of the former, saith צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot; and in this place will I give peace, saith צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot’. 10. In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of יְהוָה - the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying: 11. ‘Thus saith צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot: Ask now the priests for instruction, saying: 12. If one bear hallowed flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch ‘bread’, or ‘pottage’, or ‘wine’, or ‘oil’, or’ any food’, shall it be holy?’ And the priests answered and said: ‘No’. 13. Then said Haggai: ‘If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean?’ And the priests answered and said: ‘It shall be unclean’. 14. Then answered Haggai, and said: ‘So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith יְהוָה - the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean. 15. And now, I pray you, consider from this day and forward before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of יְהוָה - the LORD, 16. through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten; when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty press-measures, there were but twenty; 17. I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the work of your hands; yet ye turned not to Me, saith יְהוָה - the LORD, 18. consider, I pray you, from this day and forward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of יְהוָה - the LORD’s temple was laid, consider it; 19. is the seed yet in the barn? yea, the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive-tree hath not brought forth from this day will I bless you’. 20. And the word of יְהוָה - the LORD came the second time unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying: 21. ‘Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying: I will shake the heavens and the earth; 22. and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother. 23. In that day, saith צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, My servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith יְהוָה - the LORD, and will make thee as a signet; for I have chosen thee, saith צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהִים-יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim Tz’va’ot’”.

Commentary on Haggai Chapter 2:

Verses 1-9: (The Greater Glory). The chapter opens on the final day of the feast of Sukkot, a time of harvest and joy, yet the people are mourning the “nothingness” of the new Temple. The Almighty’s response is a call to “be strong” and “work”, reminding them that the Covenant established at the Exodus remains unchanged. The “shaking of the heavens and the earth” is a prophetic declaration that the current geopolitical order is temporary. The “desirable things of all nations” will eventually flow into this house, not as a tribute to man, but as recognition of the Divine. The “greater glory” of this second house is not found in its architecture, but in the “peace” (Shalom) that the Almighty establishes within its walls.

Verses 10-14: (The Contagion of Holiness vs. Impurity) Haggai presents a “ruling” (Torah) regarding ritual purity to illustrate a moral point. He asks if holiness can be transferred by touch (it can not), whereas impurity spreads easily. This is a profound ethical metaphor: building a holy Temple does not automatically make a corrupt people holy, but a corrupt heart can defile the work of their hands. The lesson is that the physical labour of reconstruction must be accompanied by an internal cleansing of the nation’s character. The “offerings” are only as pure as the hands that present them.

Verses 15-19: (From Scarcity to Blessing). Haggai invites the people to “consider” their economic hardships, the blighted crops and empty vats. He links these struggles to their previous apathy toward the spiritual centre of their lives. However, a pivot occurs in verse 19: “from this day will I bless you” The blessing is not earned by the completion of the Temple, but by the commitment to begin. It teaches that the Divine response meets us at the moment of our sincere resolve, even before the fruits of our labour are visible.

Verses 20-23: (The Signet Ring of Authority). The final prophecy is directed to Zerubbabel, the civil leader and descendant of David. Amidst the predicted upheaval of kingdoms and the “overthrow of thrones”, Zerubbabel is chosen to be a “signet ring”. In the ancient world, a ‘signet ring’ represented the king’s ‘personal authority and identity’. This imagery signifies a restoration of the Davidic legacy, not necessarily as a militant monarchy, but as a symbolic anchor of Divine choice and governance in a chaotic world.

My Closing Message:
Haggai Chapter 2 teaches us that our perceived limitations, the “smallness” of our efforts, does not limit the Almighty’s ability to work through us. The chapter challenges us to realize that while ‘impurity’ and ‘cynicism’ spread easily, ‘holiness’ requires intentional, sustained work! It reminds us that the true “glory” of any endeavour is the ‘peace’ and ‘presence’ we cultivate within it. As we move forward, may we be encouraged by the promise that when we lay the foundation for a higher purpose, the blessing will begin that very day!
