Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Genesis Chapter 7:1-24”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Genesis Chapter 7 describes the fulfilment of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s (God’s) warning. The years of preparation end as the door of the Ark is closed. This chapter focuses on the transition from the dry land to the rising waters, emphasizing the precision of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s timing and the preservation of the remnant of life amidst a world-changing judgment.

Below is the chapter 7 ‘Text’ followed by an ‘Explanation’s based on JPS-1917 version of the Torah:

Verse 1: “And יְהוָה - the LORD said unto Noah: ‘Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before Me in this generation.

Explanation: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim invites Noah and his family into safety, specifically citing Noah’s personal righteousness as the reason for their salvation.

Verse 2:  Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee seven and seven, each with his mate; and of the beasts that are not clean two, each with his mate;

Explanation: A distinction is made between “clean” and “unclean” animals. More of the clean animals are taken, likely for future sacrifices and sustenance.

Verse 3: Of the fowl also of the air, seven and seven, male and female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

Explanation: The birds are included in the expanded “seven and seven” count to ensure their populations can quickly recover.

Verse 4: For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I blot out from off the face of the ground’.

Explanation: A final one-week warning is given before the rain begins, defining the exact duration of the storm.

Verse 5: And Noah did according unto all that יְהוָה - the LORD commanded him.

Explanation: Noah remains consistent in his obedience, following the final instructions for boarding.

Verse 6: And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

Explanation: This provides the chronological marker for the event in the timeline of the patriarchs.

Verse 7: And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

Explanation: The family enters the vessel as the threat of the rising water becomes imminent.

Verse 8: Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the ground,

Explanation: The diversity of life is gathered, representing all categories of land-dwelling creatures.

Verse 9: There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, as אֱלֹהִים - Elohim commanded Noah.

Explanation: The animals arrive by Divine instinct, following the order established in the previous chapter.

Verse 10: And it came to pass after the seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

Explanation: Exactly as promised, the window of mercy closes and the judgment begins.

Verse 11: In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Explanation: The flood is not just rain; it is a tectonic and atmospheric event where water rises from beneath the earth and falls from above.

Verse 12: And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Explanation: The period of constant downpour matches the Divine decree.

Verse 13: In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;

Explanation: The text emphasizes that the entire family was safely inside on the day the flood began.

Verse 14:
Text: They, and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after its kind, and every fowl after its kind, every bird of every sort.

Explanation: A final roll call of the inhabitants of the Ark, highlighting the “kind for kind” preservation.

Verse 15:
Text: And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh wherein is the breath of life.

Explanation: This reaffirms the systematic entry of all air-breathing land animals.

Verse 16: And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as אֱלֹהִים - Elohim had commanded him; and יְהוָה - the LORD shut him in.

Explanation: A powerful detail: Noah did not close the door himself; אֱלֹהִים - Elohim performed the final act of sealing the Ark.

Verse 17: And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bore up the ark, and it was lifted up above the earth.

Explanation: As the water level rises, the Ark begins to float, separating the survivors from the ground.

Verse 18: And the waters prevailed, and increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.

Explanation: The vessel is now adrift on a world that has become a single ocean.

Verse 19: And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high mountains that were under the whole heaven were covered.

Explanation: The flood reaches a global scale, submerging even the highest peaks.

Verse 20: Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.

Explanation: The depth is specified as roughly 22 feet above the highest mountain tops.

Verse 21: And all flesh perished that moved upon the earth, both fowl, and cattle, and beast, and every swarming thing that swarmeth upon the earth, and every man;

Explanation: The consequence of the corruption mentioned in Chapter 6 is fulfilled.

Verse 22: All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, whatsoever was in the dry land, died.

Explanation: This concludes the record of the loss of life outside the Ark.

Verse 23: And He blotted out every living substance which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and creeping thing, and fowl of the heaven; and they were blotted out from the earth; and Noah only was left, and they that were with him in the ark.

Explanation: The contrast is complete: total loss for the world, and total preservation for those inside the covenant vessel.

Verse 24: And the waters prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days”.

Explanation: Even after the rain stopped, the earth remained submerged for five months.

My Closing Message:

Chapter 7 illustrates the absolute reliability of the Divine Word. When אֱלֹהִים - Elohim says He will act, He does. However, the chapter also highlights the security of those who walk with Him. While the world outside was “blotted out”, those within the Ark were “shut in” by אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s own hand. It is a testament to the fact that even in the midst of the greatest storms, there is a place of safety for the righteous.
