Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Genesis Chapter 30”

  Part Two - Verses 22-43..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Let us read Genesis Chapter 30, verses 22-43: Below the verses are the Explanation’s. (The Chapter is from JPS-1917 version of the Torah).

Verse 22: “And אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) remembered Rachel, and אֱלֹהִים - Elohim hearkened to her, and opened her womb.

Explanation Verse 22: Explanation אֱלֹהִים - Elohim “remembers” Rachel, meaning Divine attention turns toward her plight. This marks a turning point.

Verse 23: And she conceived, and bore a son, and said: ‘אֱלֹהִים - Elohim hath taken away my reproach’.

Explanation Verse 23: Rachel conceives and gives birth, removing the shame she felt from her barrenness.

Verse 24: And she called his name Joseph, saying: ‘יְהוָה - the LORD add to me another son’.

Explanation Verse 24: Rachel names Joseph, expressing gratitude and also a hope for yet another son in the future.

Verse 25: And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban: ‘Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country’.

Explanation Verse 25: After Joseph’s birth, Jacob feels ready to return to his homeland, having fulfilled his original purpose of finding a wife.

Verse 26: ‘Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served thee, and let me go; for thou knowest my service wherewith I have served thee’.

Explanation Verse 26: Jacob requests release from Laban’s service, emphasizing his desire to return with his own family.

Verse 27: And Laban said unto him: ‘If now I have found favour in thine eyes I have observed the signs, and יְהוָה - the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake’.

Explanation Verse 27: Laban acknowledges that he has prospered because of Jacob’s presence, attributing it to Divine favour.

Verse 28: And he said: ‘Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it’.

Explanation Verse 28: Laban invites Jacob to name his wages, showing his desire to retain Jacob’s labour.

Verse 29: And he said unto him: ‘Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle have fared with me.

Explanation Verse 29: Jacob reminds Laban of the prosperity he has brought to the household.

Verse 30: For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it hath increased abundantly; and יְהוָה - the LORD hath blessed thee whithersoever I turned. And now when shall I provide for mine own house also?’

Explanation Verse 30: Jacob argues that he must now provide for his own household, not only Laban’s.

Verse 31: And he said: ‘What shall I give thee?’ And Jacob said: ‘Thou shalt not give me aught; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed thy flock and keep it.

Explanation Verse 31: Jacob proposes a wage based on the flocks’ coloration, a system that appears modest but will work to his advantage.

Verse 32: I will pass through all thy flock to-day, removing from thence every speckled and spotted one, and every dark one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and of such shall be my hire.

Explanation Verse 32: Jacob specifies that he will take only the unusually colored animals, which would normally be a minority.

Verse 33: So shall my righteousness witness against me hereafter, when thou shalt come to look over my hire that is before thee: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and dark among the sheep, that if found with me shall be counted stolen’.

Explanation Verse 33: Jacob’s plan ensures transparency: any animal not matching the agreed‑upon pattern would clearly not belong to him.

Verse 34: And Laban said: ‘Behold, would it might be according to thy word’.

Explanation Verse 34: Laban agrees, likely believing the arrangement favours him.

Verse 35: And he removed that day the he-goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the dark ones among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.

Explanation Verse 35: Laban immediately removes the animals Jacob would have received, attempting to prevent Jacob from gaining wealth.

Verse 36: And he set three days’ journey betwixt himself and Jacob. And Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.

Explanation Verse 36: Laban distances the flocks to make it harder for Jacob to benefit from natural breeding patterns.

Verse 37: And Jacob took him rods of fresh poplar, and of the almond and of the plane-tree; and peeled white streaks in them, making the white appear which was in the rods.

Explanation Verse 37: Jacob uses rods from various trees, peeling them to create visual patterns. This reflects ancient beliefs about visual influence on breeding.

Verse 38: And he set the rods which he had peeled over against the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs where the flocks came to drink; and they conceived when they came to drink.

Explanation Verse 38: Jacob places the rods where the animals mate, following the same belief system.

Verse 39: And the flocks conceived at the sight of the rods, and the flocks brought forth streaked, speckled, and spotted.

Explanation Verse 39: The animals produce offspring with the desired patterns, suggesting Divine assistance beyond Jacob’s technique.

Verse 40: And Jacob separated the lambs, he also set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the dark in the flock of Laban and put his own droves apart, and put them not unto Laban’s flock.

Explanation Verse 40: Jacob selectively breeds the stronger animals for himself, ensuring his flocks grow robust.

Verse 41: And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger of the flock did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods;

Explanation Verse 41: Jacob uses the rods only with the stronger animals, maximizing his advantage.

Verse 42: but when the flock were feeble, he put them not in; so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.

Explanation Verse 42: He refrains from using the rods with the weaker animals, ensuring those remain Laban’s.

Verse 43: And the man increased exceedingly, and had large flocks, and maid-servants and men-servants, and camels and asses”.

Explanation Verse 43: Jacob becomes exceedingly prosperous, gaining large flocks and servants. This fulfils earlier Divine promises of blessing and protection.

My Closing Message:

Genesis 30 presents a complex tapestry of human emotion, Divine involvement, and family dynamics. The chapter shows how individuals act out of longing, rivalry, and hope, yet the unfolding of events ultimately aligns with a larger Divine plan. Despite the tensions and imperfect decisions, the family of Israel continues to grow, and Jacob’s prosperity sets the stage for the next phase of his journey.
