Remember the
following truth from our beloved Torah!
“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE
WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may
keep the commandments of יְהוָה
אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem,
which I command you”. Davarim -
Deuteronomy 4:2.

In the Hebrew we have a blessed tradition,of saying a berachah -
בְּרָכָה or berachot - בְּרָכוֹת are blessings of thanksgiving
recited prior to partaking food or drink. As we do this daily if following
commandment, or witnessing natural phenomena. The purpose is to
acknowledge God as the source of all sustenance and creation.
Before eating, a ‘brachah rishonah’ (preceding blessing) is said, each beginning with:
בָּרוּךְ
אַתָּה יָהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ
מֶלֶךְ
הָעוֹלָם
“Barukh Attah YHVH Eloheinu Melech
Ha’Olam” ...
“Blessed are You, יְהוָה
אֱלֹהֵינוּ, Sovereign
of the Universe ...”
The are the six primary blessings for food and drinks, which is of course classified
by the food types shown below:
Our tradition includes six main בְּרָכוֹת blessings for food, depending on what type of food or a drink for that matter is to be consumed:
1. These include blessings for ‘bread made from five specific grains’ (Ha’Motzi).
2. Those that are from ‘grains and pastries’ (Me’zonot).
3. For consuming ‘wine or grape juice’ (Ha’Gafen).
4. For ‘tree fruits’ (Ha’Etz).
5. For ‘ground produce’ (Ha’Adamah).
6. For all ‘other foods and
drinks’ (Shehakol).
Each Sabbath and Yom Tovim (Feasts) besides the lighting the Sabbath (or Feasts) candles, before eating a series of blessings are said. Above I have shown the general בְּרָכוֹת - blessings.

In our beloved fait we say our blessings before and after eating food, or drinking (בְּרָכָה -berachot) is a way to express gratitude אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, and acknowledge Him as the Creator and source of all sustenance. Our saying the blessings (berachot) it elevating a mundane, physical act into a wonderful and a spiritual holy moment. It serves as a connection with the Divine, reinforcing our faith, and in lovingly saying though our בְּרָכוֹת - berachot, we prevent the theft of a great pleasure from the world, without acknowledging our Creator, יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD Eloheino, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - Baruch Shem Kadosho - Blessed be His Holy Name!
