Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command youNEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Ezekiel Chapter 36”

And also, Isaiah Chapters 40-55..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Comparing Ezekiel 36 and  Isaiah 40-55, reveals two distinct yet complementary visions of restoration for the exiled Judeans. While Ezekiel focuses on a “restoration of honour” through the physical and moral transformation of the land and people,  whilst Isaiah 40-55 offers a “comfort-driven” vision centred on a New Exodus and the supreme sovereignty of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God).

Please Note: This is a relatively a short study.

Key Comparisons between Ezekiel 36 and Isaiah 40–55 are as follows:

Feature

Ezekiel 36 (Land Restoration)

Isaiah 40–55 (Comfort Oracles)

Primary Motivation:

Vindication of אֱלֹהִים Elohim’s Name: He acts not for Israel’s sake, but to restore His reputation among the nations.

Compassion and Comfort: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim speaks “tenderly” to a traumatized people whose “penalty is paid”.

Nature of Restoration:

Internal & Material: Focuses on a “new heart”, the indwelling Spirit, and the land becoming like the Garden of Eden.

Cosmic & Theological: Emphasizes אֱלֹהִים as the unique Creator and Redeemer who makes a “way in the wilderness”.

The "Land" Motif:

Agricultural & Geographical: The “mountains of Israel” will bear fruit and cities will be rebuilt as a sign of covenant wholeness.

Transformational Landscape: Nature itself (mountains, trees) bursts into song as the exiles return in a ritualistic procession.

Key Divine Role:

The Priest/Purifier: אֱלֹהִים “sprinkles clean water” to remove defilement and idols.

The Redeemer/Creator:   אֱלֹהִים acts as the sovereign Master of history, even using foreign kings like Cyrus.

Distinctive Elements of Each Vision:

Ezekiel’s Priest-Prophet Perspective: Ezekiel 36 is saturated with priestly concerns for purity and defilement. The land “devoured” its people because of their “uncleanness” (like a woman's menstrual impurity), and restoration requires a literal and ritualistic cleansing by God. The restoration of the land is a “Covenant sign” of inner regeneration—the "heart of stone" replaced by a "heart of flesh".

Isaiah’s “New Exodus” Theme: Isaiah 40–55 reimagines the return from Babylon as a second Exodus. Unlike the first Exodus, which was a “hasty” flight, this one is a majestic, joyful return led by the LORD Himself. The “Comfort Oracles” serve as a poetic reimagination to heal cultural trauma, reminding the people that they are still God's chosen “Servant”.

The Global Scope: In Ezekiel, the “nations” look on and learn that the LORD is powerful enough to restore His people. In Second Isaiah, the nations' recognition of God's sovereignty is often tied to the “Servant’s” suffering and mission to be a “light to the nations”.
