Re Tanakh versions:
Throughout this site I may use any of the
following three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2. “Mechon-Mamre.org”
(MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org”
(SEF), three brilliant versions, although JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Remember the
following truth from our beloved Torah!
“Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which
I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM
IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה
אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem,
which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

Introduction:
Welcome to a very unusual study, which is all about the Book of Exodus and what it is really all about. We know that Moshe - Moses plays a huge part, but the question being is Exodus all about Moshe - Moses? The truth is partially about Moshe, but it is mostly all about אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim (God), בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - ‘Baruch Shem Kadosho’ - ‘Blessed be His Holy Name’!

What
makes Exodus so different from Genesis?
Of course, it is true
that both books were written by Moshe - Moses under the inspiration of the רוּחַ
הַקֹּדֶשׁ - ‘Ruach HaKodesh’, and it is also true that both books are excellent historical
narratives. However, there is one major difference between these two books:
Moses was an eye witness to everything in the book of Exodus except for Chapter
One (covering the events leading up to his birth) and part of chapter Two (regarding his actual birth).
By verse 11 in chapter
2, Moses has become a grown man, so everything else that happens in the
following chapters is told to us from the perspective of his experiences.

אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) did all the
following to, or with Moses!
Let us look
at some of his Moses experiences in Exodus:
Moses gave us a first-hand account of committing a murder.
He experienced the burning bush that was not consumed.
He heard the voice of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim telling him to go back to
Moses argued with אֱלֹהִים - Elohim about his qualifications.
He witnessed his staff turning into a snake and picked the snake up by the tail.
It was his hand that turned leprous and then was healed.
Moses stood in the throne room of Pharaoh and threatened him with the plagues.
He faced the anger of the Israelites who blamed him for their extra work.
Moses heard the great cry in
He was the vessel אֱלֹהִים - Elohim used to part the
He was the one who struck the rock, providing water for the Israelites.
Moses walked up
It was Moses who received the Ten Commandments from אֱלֹהִים - Elohim Himself.
He heard אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s promise of a land for the Israelites.
He received all of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s instructions for how His people should live and worship.
Moses pled with אֱלֹהִים - Elohim on behalf of the idolatrous Israelites.
He got to see the remnants of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s glory.
It was his face that shone after spending time with אֱלֹהִים - Elohim.
Moses led the Israelites in making everything to אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s specifications.

The fact that Moses was an eye-witness to these things does not affect the credibility of the words (he was, after all, writing what the ‘Ruach HaKodesh’ told him to write), but it does affect the style of the writing. While Genesis may seem to jump around and miss details, Exodus is told in a more cohesive way. It is easy to follow along with the Israelites as Moses shared the details.
It is incredible to think that Moses experienced the things he wrote down. I often think experiencing just one of the things on that list first hand would be life-changing, and he got to experience all of them. But that is not the point of the book of Exodus.
The truth is that Exodus was all about אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim (God).
Even though Moses is giving us a first-hand account, yet the book of Exodus is not all about Moses. It is not just about the Israelites, or for that matter about the exodus either. The book of Exodus is all about אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim!

Further Moses experiences with in Exodus by Elohim:
אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) ‘He’
did all the following to, or with Moses.
In all cases below it was …
He saved Moses from the
He showed up in the burning bush that was not consumed
He gave Moses instructions and encouragement as He called Moses to be the means by which He freed His people from captivity.
He used the plagues to demonstrate His power above the gods of the Egyptians.
He was patient with Pharaoh, giving him chance after too chance to obey.
He showed his favour to the Israelites by confining the plagues to the Egyptians.
He demonstrated his mercy toward the Israelites, who by faith obeyed His instructions for the Passover.
He followed through on His threats to Pharaoh when he refused to submit.
He showed up as a pillar of cloud and fire to guide and protect the Israelites.
He stopped the waters of the
He caused the waters to cover and drown the hosts of the Egyptian army.
He turned bitter water into sweet water and brought water from a rock.
He provided food for the Israelites while they wandered in the wilderness.
He met Moses on
He showed mercy to the Israelites when they worshipped the golden calf in sending a plague rather than annihilating them all.
He protected Moses as He passed by him.
He not only gave Moses detailed instructions, but He also empowered workers with supernatural talents to accomplish the tasks.

While Moses’ experiences are awe-inspiring, do not let them distract from the goal of the book: to know אֱלֹהִים - Elohim. It is important for us to see אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s full character, and the book of Exodus shows us many facets. For He is ‘loving’, ‘merciful’, and ‘gracious;, but He is also ‘Holy’ and ‘just’!
When Proverbs chapter 1, verse 7 tells us that …
“The fear of יְהוָה - the LORD is the beginning of knowledge”.
‘Fear of יְהוָה
- the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
we should not downplay or reject the term “fear”. Yes, אֱלֹהִים
is our
Father, and our friend, but we should never forget that only אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim is Holy and He requires holiness from all
of us! יְהוָה בָּרוּךְ = Baruch the LORD!
