Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“Exodus Chapter 16:19-36”

Part Two..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:
In this concluding portion of the manna narrative, the focus shifts from the miracle of the food’s arrival to the discipline of its consumption. The text outlines the boundaries of trust, specifically through the prohibition of hoarding and the sanctification of the seventh day. Through these 18 verses, the wilderness becomes a classroom where the Israelites learn that physical sustenance is bound to a specific rhythm of work and rest, establishing the Sabbath as a foundational pillar of their new identity.

Let us now read Exodus Chapter 16:19-36: (JPS-1917 version of the Torah).

19. And Moses said unto them: ‘Let no man leave of it till the morning’. 20. Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and rotted; and Moses was wroth with them. 21. And they gathered it morning by morning, every man according to his eating; and as the sun waxed hot, it melted. 22. And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one; and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. 23. And he said unto them: ‘This is that which יְהוָה - the LORD hath spoken: To-morrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath unto יְהוָה - the LORD. Bake that which ye will bake, and seethe that which ye will seethe; and all that remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning’. 24. And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade; and it did not rot, neither was there any worm therein. 25. And Moses said: ‘Eat that to-day; for to-day is a Sabbath unto יְהוָה - the LORD; to-day ye shall not find it in the field. 26. Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day is the Sabbath, in it there shall be none’. 27. And it came to pass on the seventh day, that there went out some of the people to gather, and they found none. 28. And יְהוָה - the LORD said unto Moses: ‘How long refuse ye to keep My commandments and My laws? 29. See that יְהוָה - the LORD hath given you the Sabbath; therefore He giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day’. 30. So the people rested on the seventh day. 31. And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna; and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32. And Moses said: ‘This is the thing which יְהוָה - the LORD hath commanded: Let an omerful of it be kept throughout your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt’. 33. And Moses said unto Aaron: ‘Take a jar, and put an omerful of manna therein, and lay it up before יְהוָה - the LORD, to be kept throughout your generations;. 34. As יְהוָה - the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. 35. And the children of Israel did eat the manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat the manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan36. Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah”.

Let us now look at all verses covered with Explanations:

Explanations Verses 19-20: Moses commands that no manna be left over until the morning. When some individuals disregard this and “left of it until the morning”, it breeds worms and stinks. This demonstrates that attempting to store what is meant for daily reliance results in immediate decay.

Explanations Verses 21-22: The people gather the manna “every morning”, and as the sun waxes hot, it melts. On the sixth day, the gathering yields a “double portion”, which the rulers of the congregation report to Moses, seeking clarification.

Explanations Verses 23-24: Moses explains that the sixth day’s surplus is for the “solemn rest, a holy Sabbath unto יְהוָה - the LORD”. They are told to bake and seethe what they need, and the remainder is laid up for the morning. Unlike previous days, it “did not stink, neither was there any worm therein”.

Explanations Verses 25-27: Moses instructs the people to eat the stored portion on the seventh day because “to-day is a Sabbath unto יְהוָה - the LORD; to-day ye shall not find it in the field”. Despite this, some people go out to gather on the seventh day and find nothing.

Explanations Verses 28-30: יְהוָה - the LORD rebukes the people through Moses for refusing to keep the commandments. The instruction is made clear: “abide ye every man in his place” on the seventh day. Consequently, the people rest on the seventh day.

Explanations Verse 31: The house of Israel names the bread Manna. It is described as being like “coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey”.

Explanations Verses 32-34: Moses commands that an omer of it be kept for “your generations”, so they may see the bread with which the people were fed in the wilderness. Aaron places a jar of manna “before the Testimony” to be kept.

Explanations Verses 35-36: The text records that the children of Israel ate manna for forty years, until they reached the borders of the land of Canaan. The section ends with a technical definition: “Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah”.

My Closing Message:
The final verses of this chapter illustrate that the manna was not merely a solution to hunger, but a tool for spiritual regulation. By providing a double portion on the sixth day and nothing on the seventh, the text establishes that the Sabbath is built into the very fabric of nature's provision. The preservation of the omer serves as a perpetual witness that the same Power which liberated Israel from Egypt sustained them through four decades of transition, proving that “man doth not live by bread only” but by the word of the Law.
