Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Exodus Chapter 12:28-51”

Part Two..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Part Two transitions from the quiet, candlelit homes of the Israelites to the midnight cry of Egypt. These verses document the “Great Exit” the moment when Pharaoh finally yields and the promise made to Abraham centuries earlier is fulfilled. We see the birth of a nation in a single night, as they departed not as ‘fugitives’, but as a ‘triumphant assembly’ carrying the “wealth of Egypt” and the promise of a future, blessed be אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim (God).

Below are the verses from Exodus Chapter 12, verses 28 to 51: with Explanations located directly below the verses.

28. And the children of Israel went and did so; as יְהוָה - the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

Explanation: Verse 28: The children of Israel obey. They do exactly as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. This total obedience is the final prerequisite for their liberation.

29. And it came to pass at midnight, that יְהוָה - the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the first-born of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the first-born of cattle. 30. And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

Explanation: Verses 29-30: At midnight, the Tenth Plague strikes. From the firstborn of Pharaoh to the firstborn of the captive in the dungeon, no Egyptian house is spared. A “great cry” rises up, for there was “not an Egyptian house where there was not one dead”.

31. And he called for Moses and Aaron by night and said: ‘Rise up, get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve יְהוָה - the LORD, as ye have said. 32. Take both your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also’.

Explanation: Verses 31-32: Pharaoh summons Moses and Aaron in the night. He no longer sets conditions. He tells them to go, take their flocks, and even asks for a blessing, a total reversal of his previous arrogance.

33. And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, to send them out of the land in haste; for they said: ‘We are all dead men’. 34. And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading-troughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.

Explanation: Verses 33-34: The Egyptians “urged the people” to leave quickly, fearing they would all die. In their haste, the Israelites carried their dough before it was leavened, wrapping their kneading-troughs in their clothes on their shoulders.

35. And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they asked of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment. 36. And יְהוָה - the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. And they despoiled the Egyptians.

Explanation: Verses 35-36: Fulfilling the promise made at the Burning Bush, the Israelites ask for silver, gold, and raiment. יְהוָה - the LORD gives them favour in the eyes of the Egyptians, who “let them have what they asked”. They despoiled Egypt, receiving “wages” for centuries of unpaid labour.

37. And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, beside children. 38. And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.

Explanation: Verses 37-38: The journey begins from Rameses to Succoth. About 600,000 men on foot, besides children.“mixed multitude” (of non-Israelites who recognised the power of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim - God) also went up with them, along with vast amounts of livestock.

39. And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.

Explanation: Verse 39: They baked the unleavened dough into cakes of Matzah. Because they were “thrust out of Egypt”, they had no time to prepare provisions or let the bread rise.

40. Now the time that the children of Israel dwelt in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. 41. And it came to pass at the end of four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the host of יְהוָה - the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

Explanation: Verses 40-41: The text notes that the sojourning of the children of Israel was 430 years. On that very day the “selfsame day” all the hosts of יְהוָה - the LORD went out.

42. It was a night of watching unto יְהוָה - the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt; this same night is a night of watching unto יְהוָה - the LORD for all the children of Israel throughout their generations.

Explanation: Verse 42: This is called a “night of watching” (Leil Shimurim) unto יְהוָה - the LORD. It is a night dedicated to אֱלֹהִים - Elohim for all generations.

43. And יְהוָה - the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron: ‘This is the ordinance of the Passover: there shall no alien eat thereof; 44. but every man’s servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof. 45 A sojourner and a hired servant shall not eat thereof. 46. In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth aught of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof. 47. All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. 48. And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the Passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land; but no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. 49. One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you’.

Explanation: Verses 43-49: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim gives the Statute of the Passover regarding who may eat of the sacrifice. It is restricted to the circumcised. A stranger or a hired servant may not eat it unless they join the covenant through circumcision. There is to be one law for the home-born and the stranger who sojourns among you.

50. Thus did all the children of Israel; as יְהוָה - the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

Explanation: Verse 50: Again, the emphasis is on the Israelites' faithful execution of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s word.

51. And it came to pass the selfsame day that יְהוָה - the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts.

Explanation: Verse 51: The chapter concludes by reiterating that on this “selfsame day”, יְהוָה - the LORD brought the children of Israel out of Egypt by their hosts.

My Closing Message:

The conclusion of Chapter 12 teaches us about the power of the “Selfsame Day”. אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s promises may seem delayed to human eyes, but they are kept to the very minute. The transition from the “great cry” of Egypt to the “hosts of יְהוָה - the LORD” marching out shows that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim transforms the night of darkness into a night of watching. We learn that while we must be ready (the Matzah), it is ultimately אֱלֹהִים - Elohim who breaks the chains. Our history as a people begins not with a slow evolution, but with a sudden, Divinely-timed leap into freedom”.
