Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Exodus Chapter 11:1-10”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Exodus Chapter 11 serves as the final bridge between the long series of warnings and the ultimate execution of Divine judgment. It is a short but potent chapter that transitions from the failed negotiations of the previous plagues to the absolute certainty of the tenth. Here, the focus shifts to the “distinction” אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God) makes between those who serve Him and those who do not. The chapter establishes that the coming redemption is not a quiet escape but a triumphant departure.

Below are the verses from Exodus Chapter 11, verses 1 to 10: with Explanations located directly below the verses..

1. “And יְהוָה - the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Yet one plague more will I bring upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence; when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.

Explanation: Verse 1: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim informs Moses that only one more plague remains. This final stroke will be so decisive that Pharaoh will not merely let the people go, but will actively drive them out of the land.

2. Speak now in the ears of the people, and let them ask every man of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold’.

Explanation: Verse 2: The Israelites are instructed to ask their Egyptian neighbours for articles of silver and gold. This represents the collection of “back wages” for centuries of unpaid labour, ensuring they do not leave empty-handed.

3. And יְהוָה - the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants, and in the sight of the people.

Explanation: Verse 3: The Egyptians’ hearts are moved to view the Israelites with favour. Moses himself is described as being “very great” in the eyes of Pharaoh’s officials and the common people, signifying a shift in power dynamics.

4. And Moses said: ‘Thus saith יְהוָה - the LORD: About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt’;

Explanation: Verse 4: Moses delivers the final warning to Pharaoh: “About midnight”, the Creator will go throughout the land of Egypt. This specifies a precise time for the Divine intervention,

5. and all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the first-born of the maid-servant that is behind the mill; and all the first-born of cattle.

Explanation: Verse 5: The plague is defined as the death of every firstborn. This strike is indiscriminate regarding social class from the heir of Pharaoh on the throne to the son of the lowliest slave girl and even extends to the firstborn of the livestock.

6. And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there hath been none like it, nor shall be like it any more.

Explanation: Verse 6: A “great cry” will be heard throughout Egypt, unlike any mourning ever experienced before or that will ever be experienced again. This represents the total collapse of Egyptian national pride.

7. But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog whet his tongue, against man or beast; that ye may know how that יְהוָה - the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.

Explanation: Verse 7: In stark contrast, “not a dog shall bark” against the Israelites or their animals. This supernatural silence highlights the “distinction” אֱלֹהִים - Elohim makes between Egypt and Israel, showing total protection over His people.

8. And all these, thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down unto me, saying: Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee; and after that I will go out’, And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

Explanation: Verse 8: Moses predicts that Pharaoh’s own officials will come and bow before him, pleading for the Israelites to leave. After delivering this stinging rebuke Moses leaves Pharaoh’s presence in “hot anger”.

9. And יְהוָה - the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Pharaoh will not hearken unto you; that My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt’.

Explanation: Verse 9: אֱלֹהִים - Elohim reiterates that Pharaoh’s refusal was foreseen so that the Divine “wonders may be multiplied”. The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart served to provide a complete demonstration of Divine sovereignty.

10. And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh; and יְהוָה - the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go out of his land”.

Explanation: Verse 10: The chapter concludes by summarizing that despite all the wonders performed by Moses and Aaron, Pharaoh remained stubborn because the final, most terrible sign had not yet been executed”.

My Closing Message:

Exodus 11 teaches us that there is a moment when the time for talk ends and the time for action begins. For nine plagues, Pharaoh treated the Divine demands as a negotiation; with the tenth, he learns that justice is inevitable. The “distinction” mentioned in verse 7 is the core of the chapter: even in the midst of a national catastrophe, those under Divine protection remain in perfect peace so quiet that not even a dog barks. It reminds us that our worth is not defined by our current status, but by the One who calls us His own and prepares a way for our complete liberation.
