Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Devarim Chapter 1:25-46”

Part Two..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

In these verses, Moses holds up a mirror to the people. He recounts the events at Kadesh-Barnea not merely as a history lesson, but as a spiritual warning. This section serves as the “great what if” of the Torah. Moses reminds the new generation that they are standing at the same threshold where their fathers faltered, emphasizing that the distance between a promise and its fulfilment is often measured by the quality of one’s faith in אֱלֹהִים - Elohim.

Let us read Devarim - Deuteronomy Chapter 1: Verses 25 to 46: (JPS-1917 version of the Torah).

25. “And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us back word, and said: ‘Good is the land which יְהוָה - the LORD our אֱלֹהִים - Elohim giveth unto us’. 26. Yet ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Eloheynu; 27. and ye murmured in your tents, and said: ‘Because יְהוָה - the LORD hated us, He hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28. Whither are we going up? our brethren have made our heart to melt, saying: The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there’. 29. Then I said unto you: ‘Dread not, neither be afraid of them. 30. יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Eloheynu who goeth before you, He shall fight for you, according to all that He did for you in Egypt before your eyes; 31. and in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - The LORD thy Eloheucha bore thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came unto this place. 32. Yet in this thing ye do not believe יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloheychem , 33. Who went before you in the way, to seek you out a place to pitch your tents in: in fire by night, to show you by what way ye should go, and in the cloud by day’. 34. And יְהוָה - the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and swore, saying: 35. ‘Surely there shall not one of these men, even this evil generation, see the good land, which I swore to give unto your fathers, 36. save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children; because he hath wholly followed יְהוָה - the LORD’. 37. Also יְהוָה - the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying: ‘Thou also shalt not go in thither; 38. Joshua the son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he shall go in thither; encourage thou him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. 39. Moreover your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, and your children, that this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it. 40. But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea’. 41. Then ye answered and said unto me: ‘We have sinned against יְהוָה - the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Eloheynu commanded us’. And ye girded on every man his weapons of war, and deemed it a light thing to go up into the hill-country. 42. And יְהוָה - the LORD said unto me: ‘Say unto them: Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies’. 43. So I spoke unto you, and ye hearkened not; but ye rebelled against the commandment of יְהוָה - the LORD, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill-country. 44. And the Amorites, that dwell in that hill-country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even unto Hormah45. And ye returned and wept before יְהוָה - the the LORD; but יְהוָה - the LORD hearkened not to your voice, nor gave ear unto you. 46. So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there”.

Let us view the Commentary: (Verses 25-46 JPS-1917 version of the Torah).

The Anatomy of a Rebellion.

The Goodness of the Land (25): The spies return with tangible proof, the fruit of the land and a clear testimony: “Good is the land which יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Eloheynu giveth unto us”. This verse establishes that the failure was never about the quality of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s gift, but the hearts of the recipients.

The Poison of Murmuring (26-28): Despite the evidence, the people rebelled. Moses highlights their internal dialogue: “Because יְהוָה - the LORD hated us, He hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt”. In Hebraic thought, this is considered a peak of spiritual distortion of interpreting אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s acts of liberation as acts of malice. Their fear of the “Anakim” (giants) and the “cities walled up to heaven” blinded them to the אֱלֹהִים - Elohim who had already defeated Pharaoh.

The Rejected Reassurance (29-33): Moses recalls how he pleaded with them, reminding them that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim beareth thee, as a man doth bear his son”. Yet, they could not trust the One who went before them in “fire by night” and “a cloud by day” to find them a place to pitch their tents.

The Sentence and the Successors (34-40): אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s response to their unbelief is an irrevocable oath: that this “evil generation” would not see the land. Only Caleb and Joshua are spared because they “wholly followed יְהוָה - the LORD”. Crucially, Moses notes that he too was barred entry “for your sakes”, connecting his fate to the people’s collective journey.

The Futility of Presumption (41-46): Realizing their mistake, the people suddenly decide to fight, but without אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s command or presence. They are chased “as bees do” and beaten down. This illustrates a vital principle: acting on yesterday’s command today, after the opportunity has passed, is not obedience, it is presumption.

My Closing Message:

Walking by Faith, Not by Fear.

The first chapter of Deuteronomy ends with the people weeping at Kadesh, but אֱלֹהִים - Elohim “hearkened not to your voice”. The lesson for the new generation and for us is that timing and trust are inseparable. We cannot manufacture a victory when we have rejected the “Source of our strength”. However, even in the “many days” of wandering that followed, אֱלֹהִים - Elohim did not abandon them. He waited for a generation that would look at the giants and see only the greatness of the Giver!
