With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.
Our forefather Avram was the first person in the world to discover אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God). And then אֱלֹהִים revealed Himself to him and said: “Lech lecha” - ‘go forth’; it is time for you to begin your journey, for yourself!
At that stage, Avram was already an elderly man and still had no children of his own. He was endlessly devoted to helping others, and many spiritual disciples were drawn to his tent.
He was also an enlightened man of science, who could observe the stars and predict the future through them, and was the only one who spread faith in the one and only אֱלֹהִים throughout the world. His teachings were in great demand.
Then אֱלֹהִים revealed Himself to Aram and said, in essence: ‘To build yourself, and ultimately to establish the chosen nation, you must separate yourself’!
“Now יְהוָה - the LORD said unto Avram: ‘Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto the land that I will show thee’”. בְּרֵאשִׁית - Bereshit - Genesis 12:1. (JPS-1917 version of the Torah).
Avram did not ask questions. At an advanced age, he chose to break away, took all that he had, and set out on his way. Yet, contrary to what we might expect, that he would obey אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s command perfectly, we are surprised to find that at the moment of obedience, he brought along his nephew Lot.
“So Avram went, as יְהוָה - the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him; and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran”. Bereshit - Genesis 12:4. (JPS).
Lot was not meant to be part of the journey whose entire purpose was to “go forth… from your birthplace and from your father’s house.”
From what is described, Lot was the very opposite of his uncle Avram, the man of kindness and morality, and thus later found his natural place among the people of Sodom, “who were wicked and sinful”.
The difference between the two was also seen in their herds: Avram’s animals were muzzled (zemumot), their mouths bound so they wouldn’t graze on other fields, while Lot’s animals roamed freely, eating and damaging crops wherever they went.
This was the cause of the quarrel between them.
This difference is even emphasized in the verse “And Avram went as יְהוָה - the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him”.
Avram’s going was in accordance with ’s will but not Lot’s. Lot accompanied Aram for his own benefit, not out of Divine calling.
So why did Avram take him along and not fully obey אֱלֹהִים – Elohim’s command?
The answer is beautifully simple: Avram did not invite Lot. Lot simply came along on his own. His company was, in truth, a burden, but Avram would never consider humiliating or dismissing him.
He knew that traveling alone into the unknown was an uncompromising condition for building his home, his future, and ultimately the believing nation that would fulfill אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s will.
Yet he also knew that such a goal could never be achieved by hurting another person. Nothing good could come from behavior rooted in cruelty or insult. So Avram endured the difficulty in silence.
Later in the portion, when conflict arose between the herdsmen of Avram and Lot, Avram seized the opportunity and suggested a complete separation:
“And Avram said unto Lot: ‘Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we are brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me; if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou take the right hand, then I will go to the left’”. Bereshit - Genesis 13:8-9. (JPS-1917 version of the Torah).
Only after Lot departed did אֱלֹהִים again reveal Himself to Avram, something that had not happened during the entire time Lot was with him.
“And יְהוָה - the LORD said unto Avram, after that Lot was separated from him: ‘Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward and southward and eastward and westward; for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever’”. Bereshit - Genesis 13:14-15. (JPS-1917).
It was only then that the path was opened for fulfilling the Divine promise of founding the Hebrew nation.
The truth is, it was only when Avram returned from his time in Egypt with great wealth, he understood the purpose of that long journey: Only because of his newfound riches did Lot separate from him. Otherwise, Avram would never have told Lot directly to leave him.
All of the above teaches us that even the
loftiest goal on Earth must never be achieved through harming or insulting
another person”, for we must remain honorable, regards your standing and wealth, etc.
