Re Tanakh versions:

Throughout this site I may use any of the following three versions of the Tanakh: 1. “Jewish Publication Society” (JPS-1917), 2“Mechon-Mamre.org (MEC), and 3. “Sefaria.org (SEF), three brilliant versions, although JPS-1917 is my preferred version!

Colour coded details of our beloved TaNaKh:

1. Torah = History & Law, 2. Nevi’im = The Prophets. 3. *Ketuvim = all other Writings.

*The Ketuvim - Includes, Poetical books - Psalms, Proverbs, Job, the Megillot, or Scrolls - Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations of Jeremiah, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, prophecy of Daniel, and history of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II.

Please Note: Some alterations or (additions) have been made relating to ‘Names’ and ‘Attributes’ of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, having been corrected like it once was pre the “Masoretic Text”.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “Psalm 105:1-10

   A-Historical-Hymn..

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Tehillim - Psalm 105 serves as a “historical hymn” that shifts our gaze from our own current struggles to the long loving arc of יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim (God) providence. While other Psalms might focus on personal petition, this one is a call to collective memory. It was traditionally attributed to King David and composed for the joyous occasion of “bringing the Holy Ark to Jerusalem”. The first ten verses establish a foundational truth: our ability to praise אֱלֹהִים - Elohim today is rooted in the eternal covenant He made with our forefathers Avraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Below is the relevant ‘Text’ and the ‘Explanations’ of Verses 1 to 10: (JPS-1917 version of the Tanach).

Verses 1-2 (Proclamation):

1.O give thanks unto יְהוָה - the LORD, call upon His Name; make known His doings among the peoples.

2. Sing unto Him, sing praises unto Him; speak ye of all His marvellous works”.

Explanation: We are called to publicize אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s wonders, transforming gratitude into active testimony among the nations. Worship is comprehensive, requiring song, musical praise, and intentional meditation on His works.

Verses 3-4 (The Pursuit):

3. “Glory ye in His Holy Name; let the heart of them rejoice that seek יְהוָה - the LORD. 4. Seek ye יְהוָה - the LORD and His strength; seek His face continually”.

Explanation: True joy comes from cantering our identity in אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (“Glory be ye”) rather than ourselves. We are urged to seek His “strength” and “face” continuously, aiming for a consistent, active relationship.

Verses 5-6 (Memory & Identity):

5. “Remember His marvellous works that He hath done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth;

6. O ye seed of Avraham His servant, ye children of Jacob, His chosen ones”.

Explanation: The psalmist demands a conscious “remembrance” of אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s past miracles, identifying the audience as the spiritual heirs (“seed”) of ‘Avraham’ and ‘Jacob’, specifically chosen for this purpose.

Verses 7-10 (The Covenant):.

7. “He is יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ - the LORD our Eloheynu; His judgments are in all the earth.

8. He hath remembered His covenant for ever, the word which He commanded to a thousand generations;

9. (The covenant) which He made with Avraham, and His oath unto Isaac; 10. And He established it unto Jacob for a statute, to Israel for an everlasting covenant”.

Explanation: While אֱלֹהִים - Elohim is intimately “ours”, His sovereignty is universal. The focus shifts to the foundational, “everlasting” covenant, established through the Patriarchs (Avraham, Isaac, and Jacob) as an immutable, Divine “statute”.

My Closing Message:

These opening verses offer profound security, anchored in an “everlasting covenant” that outlasts generations. The core message is a call to action: to remember אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s faithfulness, actively seek Him, and proclaim His works. By recalling the promises made to our ancestors, we find the strength to navigate our own times.
