Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

 “12 Shabbat Verses”

(And 21 More).

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

I am sure that any faithful Hebrew, will love and uphold our blessed weekly Shabbas, it is a day to praise and worship our beloved אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, blessed be He! Giving us time to read the blessed Torah and more from the Tanakh Scriptures! Sabbath should be a day of great joy, as we pour our hearts out to אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ – “Baruch Shem Kadosho” – “Blessed be His Holy Name!”

YYYYYYY

I will commence with twelve powerful Sabbath statements from our Tanakh:

The Torah:

1: Genesis Chapter 1:5. (Why the Sabbath starts in the evening?).

“And אֱלֹהִים - Elohim called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day”.

2: Genesis Chapter 2:2-3. (אֱלֹהִים - Elohim rested on the sixth day after creating the world).

2. “And on the seventh day אֱלֹהִים - Elohim finished His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. 3. And אֱלֹהִים - Elohim blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it He rested from all His work which אֱלֹהִים - Elohim in creating had made”.

3. Exodus Chapter 20:10.

20. “For in six days יְהוָה - the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day; wherefore יְהוָה - the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it”.

4. Exodus Chapter 16:23.

23 “And he said unto them: ‘This is that which יְהוָה - the LORD hath spoken: Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath unto יְהוָה - the LORD. Bake that which ye will bake, and seethe that which ye will seethe; and all that remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning’”.

5. Exodus Chapter 31:12-17. (Sabbath a sign throughout our generations).

12. “And יְהוָה - the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 13. ‘Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying: Verily ye shall keep My Sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that ye may know that I am יְהוָה - the LORD who sanctify you. 14. Ye shall keep the Sabbath therefore, for it is holy unto you; every one that profaneth it shall surely be put to death; for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15. Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to יְהוָה - the LORD; whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. 16. Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. 17. It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel for ever; for in six days יְהוָה - the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased from work and rested’”.

6. Exodus Chapter 35: 1-3.

1. And Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel, and said unto them: 'These are the words which יְהוָה - the LORD hath commanded, that ye should do them. 2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a Sabbath of solemn rest to יְהוָה - the LORD; whosoever doeth any work therein shall be put to death. 3 Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the Sabbath day.'

7. Leviticus 23:1-3. (Sabbath is the first appointed time of יְהוָה - the LORD).

1. “And יְהוָה - the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2. Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: The appointed seasons of יְהוָה - the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are My appointed seasons. 3. Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation; ye shall do no manner of work; it is a Sabbath unto יְהוָה - the LORD in all your dwellings”.

8. Leviticus 26:2. (Blessings that we receive by guarding the commandments of Elohim).

2. “Ye shall keep My Sabbaths, and reverence My sanctuary: I am יְהוָה - the LORD”.

9. Numbers 28:9-10: (Details specific offerings to be made on the Sabbath day).

9. “And on the Sabbath day two he-lambs of the first year without blemish, and two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with oil, and the drink-offering thereof. 10. This is the burnt-offering of every Sabbath, beside the continual burnt-offering, and the drink-offering thereof”.

10. Deuteronomy 5:11-14. (Command to keep the Sabbath).

11. “Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - The LORD thy Eloheucha (God) commanded thee. 12 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work; 13 but the seventh day is a Sabbath unto יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - The LORD thy Eloheucha, in it thou shalt not do any manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy man-servant and thy maid-servant may rest as well as thou. 14 And thou shalt remember that thou was a servant in the land of Egypt, and יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - The LORD thy Eloheucha brought thee out thence by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - The LORD thy Eloheucha commanded thee to keep the Sabbath day”.

The Tanakh:

11. Ezekiel 20: (Sabbat is a sign between the Lord and us).

19. “I am יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloheychem (God); walk in My statutes, and keep Mine ordinances, and do them; 20and hallow My Sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that ye may know that I am יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloheychem”.

12. Isaiah 66:23. (From Sabbath to Sabbath).

23 “And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me, saith יְהוָה - the LORD”.

However there is so much more!

For in the Torah / Tanakh, the word “Sabbath” (Shabbat) appears approximately 86 times. It is first introduced in Exodus 16:23 regarding the gathering of manna, although the concept of the seventh-day rest is established of course much earlier in the creation narrative of Genesis 2:1-3.

Below is a categorised list of key verses and passages where the Sabbath is mentioned across the Tanakh.

The Prophets (Nevi'im).

2 Kings 4:23: Mentions visiting prophets on the Sabbath and New Moon.
